Herne Bay to Stansted, Luton and London City airport: three different drives

Herne Bay to Stansted, Luton or London City is a different drive from the Gatwick and Heathrow runs. All three airports lie north of the Thames, so the car has to cross the river, either at Dartford or through the Blackwall Tunnel, and that crossing shapes the timing and what can be added to the fare.

Typical published times from a CT6 address are 1h 45m to 2h 15m for Stansted, 2h to 2h 30m for Luton and 1h 30m to 1h 50m for London City. Below is what each journey involves, the crossing rules, and the details that make the pickup time right.

Herne Bay to Stansted: the Dartford Crossing and the M11

The trip starts like every airport run from town, west on the A299 to the M2 at Brenley Corner. It then crosses the Thames at Dartford and heads north on the M11 towards the airport. Typical time from your address to the terminal is 1h 45m to 2h 15m.

At the airport, the Express Set Down area is outside Departures. Stansted allocates a 15-minute period there and charges every vehicle that uses it, with payment due online or by phone by midnight the day after. For you that means a short, organised stop: cases out, trolley, in through the doors.

Take a 6:30am flight. If your airline wants you at the terminal two hours before, you need to be there by 4:30am; allowing the slow end of the drive puts the pickup at around 2:00am, when the roads are quiet but overnight roadworks are common.

Herne Bay to Luton airport: the longest of the five

Luton has the longest published drive from CT6: typically 2h to 2h 30m. Like Stansted it is reached over the Dartford Crossing, and the M25 does most of the work after that.

If you have ever looked at the train, the comparison is stark. From Herne Bay you would ride to London St Pancras, about 80 minutes off-peak, take a second train from London to Luton Airport Parkway, then the Luton DART, the shuttle that links the station to the terminal in four minutes. That is three vehicles and two changes with luggage, against one car from your address to the terminal.

Herne Bay to London City airport: the A2 and the Blackwall Tunnel

London City is the quickest of the three: typically 1h 30m to 1h 50m. The car takes the M2 and the A2 towards London and crosses the river through the Blackwall Tunnel.

The short drive makes it a practical choice for a day trip to a European meeting, and it pairs well with an executive car if you want to read or prepare on the way. Check your airline's check-in and bag-drop cut-off and set the pickup from that.

Crossing the Thames: when the charges apply

The two crossings follow different clocks, and both are free overnight. Car parking fees and tolls on the journey can be added to the fare where they apply, so the time of day you cross can matter.

  • Dartford Crossing (Stansted and Luton): charged between 6am and 10pm, every day including weekends and bank holidays
  • Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels (London City): charged in both directions from 06:00 to 22:00, with a peak charge 06:00 to 10:00 northbound and 16:00 to 19:00 southbound on weekdays
  • Between 10pm and 6am neither crossing is charged

Planning around the M25 and the M11

Friday afternoons and the start of the school holidays can add 30 to 45 minutes on the M25, which matters most for Luton. For those days, set the pickup earlier than the examples above and let the extra time sit on your side rather than the motorway's.

Give the flight number, the number of passengers and the cases when you book. A saloon takes two large cases, an estate three or four, and an MPV up to six passengers with four or more cases.

Flying home into Stansted, Luton or London City

The return works the same way at all three. With the flight number on the booking, the arrival is tracked and the driver is in the arrivals hall with a name board for the real landing time. You have 45 minutes of free waiting after an international flight and 30 after a domestic one, and the driver helps with the cases out to the car.

Fares are fixed for the car before you book, and they stay the same for a midnight landing or a bank holiday. No meter runs on the way home.

Choosing between the three from Herne Bay

When the same trip is on sale from more than one of these airports, the drive is worth weighing alongside the ticket price. London City is the shortest run from CT6 and the tunnel is free overnight. Stansted adds 15 to 25 minutes to that range, and Luton is the longest drive of all five London airports from Herne Bay.

Whichever you pick, put these on the booking:

  • The airport and the flight number, for both the outbound and the return
  • Your exact pickup address in CT6, which sets the fixed fare
  • Passengers, large cases and any child seats needed
  • A mobile number the driver can reach on the day

Common Questions

Questions travellers ask

London City, at typically 1h 30m to 1h 50m. Stansted takes 1h 45m to 2h 15m and Luton 2h to 2h 30m.

Tolls on the journey can be added where they apply. The Dartford charge applies from 6am to 10pm, so a crossing in the middle of the night carries no charge.

Other airports are available on request. Ask when you book.

Yes, with meet and greet in the arrivals hall and the flight tracked so the collection matches the real landing time.

An estate seats four with three or four large cases. If the luggage goes beyond that, choose the MPV, which takes up to six people and four or more large cases.
