Herne Bay to Heathrow: planning the transfer from booking to arrivals

A Herne Bay to Heathrow transfer has the widest published range of the five London airports: typically 1h 35m to 2h 10m from your address to the terminal. The spread comes from the M25, which carries the car most of the way round London.

Planning it well is mostly a matter of order. Give the right details when you book, work back from the airline's check-in time, know which drop-off you are heading for, and leave the flight home in the driver's hands.

Below are the five steps, with the times and Heathrow's own advice that apply to each.

Step 1: book the Herne Bay to Heathrow transfer with the right details

Enter the pickup address exactly, house number included, because the fixed fare is worked out for that address. Then add the terminal (Heathrow has four in use: 2, 3, 4 and 5), the flight number and time, how many people are travelling and how many large cases you have.

If children are coming, ask for child seats and give their ages. If you are booking for someone else, put their name on the booking so it is the name on the driver's board at the other end. Booking works online, by phone on 01843 247247, on WhatsApp or by email, and the online system shows the fare for the car straight away.

Step 2: work out when to leave CT6

Heathrow advises arriving two hours before a flight within the UK or Europe and three hours before a long-haul international flight, with more time in busy periods such as the summer holidays and bank holiday weekends. Your airline's own instructions come first if they ask for more.

Count back from that time using the slow end of the drive, 2h 10m, and add a margin. Two examples:

  • 10:00am long-haul departure on a weekday: at the terminal by 7:00am, collected at about 4:30am
  • 9:00pm long-haul departure on a Friday in July: at the terminal by 6:00pm, collected at about 3:00pm, because Friday afternoons can add 30 to 45 minutes on the M25
  • 7:00am flight to Europe: at the terminal by 5:00am, collected at about 2:40am, with room for overnight roadworks

Step 3: the drive west from Herne Bay

The car leaves on the A299, the Thanet Way, and joins the M2 at Brenley Corner. Pickups in Herne and Broomfield start on the A291, which runs north to meet the A299 on the edge of town. From the M2 the route is the M25 west to the Heathrow junctions.

Overnight closures on the M2 and M25 are common, which is one reason the early-morning examples above carry a margin. During the day the driver follows the traffic as it is; whichever way the car goes, the fare you confirmed does not change.

Step 4: drop-off at your Heathrow terminal

Each terminal has its own drop-off area on the forecourt, so the terminal you gave in step 1 decides where the car pulls in. Check the terminal on your booking or boarding pass again the day before.

Heathrow charges every time a vehicle enters a terminal drop-off area. It is paid afterwards online, by phone or through autopay, never at a machine in the zone, and it has to be settled by midnight the next day. Car parking fees and tolls on the journey can be added to the fare where they apply; if you want to know how that affects your booking, ask when you make it.

Step 5: Heathrow to Herne Bay after you land

The return is planned around the real landing time rather than the timetable. With your flight number on the booking, the flight is tracked and the collection moves with it, at no extra cost for delays outside your control.

Your free waiting is counted from touchdown: 45 minutes after an international flight and 30 after a domestic one. The driver waits in the arrivals hall holding a name board and helps you wheel the cases out to the car; from there, the drive home to CT6 typically takes the same 1h 35m to 2h 10m.

The fixed fare for a Heathrow run

The fare is for the whole car, not each passenger, and it is set before you pay. It does not rise for a 4am start, a Sunday, a bank holiday or a slow M25. The only things that can be added are waiting beyond the free time, extra stops, a big route change asked for on the way, and parking fees or tolls where they apply.

For a family with long-haul luggage, the estate (four passengers, three or four large cases) or the MPV (up to six passengers, four or more large cases) usually makes more sense than a saloon.

Why not the train to Heathrow?

There is no train from Herne Bay that reaches any London airport. Off-peak, the town has one service an hour to London St Pancras International, about 80 minutes, and one to London Victoria, about 1 hour 40 minutes. Either way, the second half of the trip means crossing London to the far west side with every case you are taking on a three-week holiday.

That can work for a light business trip in the middle of the day. For a family, an early departure or a late landing, a single car from your street to the terminal removes the changes, the lifts and the risk of a missed connection, and the fare is the same however many of you share it.

Yes, any of the four terminals in use. Give the terminal when you book and check it again the day before.

Yes. Bookings and journeys run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and an early landing costs the same as one at midday.

Cancelling more than 24 hours before pickup is free. Between 6 and 24 hours, up to 50% may be charged; under 6 hours, or once the car has been sent, the full fare may be charged.
